What to Expect at a Professional Cleaning

A routine visit at our office takes about 45 minutes to an hour, and most patients find it far more comfortable than they expected.

Step by step

1. A conversation first. We review your health history and ask how things have felt — sensitivity, bleeding gums, anything you’ve noticed. Nothing you share is too small to mention.

2. The exam. Dr. Simeon checks each tooth, your gums, your bite, and the soft tissues of your mouth, including an oral cancer screening. Digital x-rays, when due, let us see between teeth and under the gumline.

3. Scaling. Using small instruments, we gently remove plaque and tartar — the hardened deposits your toothbrush can’t budge — especially along and just beneath the gumline. You’ll hear light scraping; it shouldn’t hurt. If anything feels uncomfortable, raise a hand and we adjust.

4. Polishing and flossing. A soft rubber cup and lightly gritty paste polish away surface stains, followed by a professional flossing.

5. Your plan. We finish by walking you through what we found in plain language, answering questions, and agreeing on any next steps — often simply “see you in six months.”

Will it hurt?

For most patients, no. If you have sensitive teeth or dental anxiety, tell us when you book — we go slower, explain everything as we go, and can use a numbing gel where needed. Gentle care is the heart of this practice.
